The secret to being free from money is one that most of us yearn for. Being able to wake up one morning and say: no more. I’m done. No more money worries, no more concerns. No, I just want to be free to enjoy myself. It sounds great doesn’t it? If we could bottle that magic and spread it around then surely the world would be a much happier place, would it not? Whether or not you can do that though, is a matter of some debate. For every self help book out there, there are thousands more that have doubts and worries that erode away at these foundations. Make you question and wonder if any of it is even worth it. Make you wonder if we’re all just daydreaming to try and escape the inevitable reality, which is that we need to go to work and need to make money. It’s not so much being a slave to the money as needing to do what everyone else does and let it be a part of our lives. After all, it pays for gifts, treats, holidays and so much more. We need it, don’t we?
Well, no. Not really. That’s the thing. Sure if you want to be going off to the Bahamas every few years then you will need cash and that’s a fact. But you don’t need to go there do you? You don’t need a new cashmere jumper, or need to dine at a Michelin starred restaurant. These things are wonderful, enjoyable, incredible things. And they should be treated as such. The expectation that we can all afford to eat out every weekend, go for champagne brunches and magnificent dinners, splash hundreds on every outfit and enjoy at least one holiday a year is largely a myth. A myth that we have created in our own minds and keep telling to one another. One that starts to fall apart once you actually start thinking about it critically. After all, what does it really mean? Having all those things? They’re amazing, absolutely amazing. But we don’t need a single one of them. They’re all things that we could easily do without if we wanted to. And what would you get in return? A freedom that’s basically invaluable. Try and put a value on It, the chance to spend almost every day doing what you do. It’s more simple than you think.
After all, you can achieve it. It’s not something that’s magical and unobtainable. All you need to do to get there is to stop caring so much about money. It is, after all, just money. It’s not needed, it’s not essential. It’s just another thing that we covet but could ultimately do without if we so wished. So why don’t we? Why don’t we make that little bit of extra effort and free ourselves from our chains? Well, for a start because they’re self forged and that makes them so much harder to escape from. Many of us don’t even realise that we’re being held captive by our own fears, and wallow in despair. We cannot break free, we cannot find a new way to live, a way to be peaceful. So instead we’re forced to wait for something better to come along, forced to dream and hope and pray. And if we do, then we might get to retire one day, might finally be free of it. But why wait? Why not break free of your own volition and through your own will. It’s far, far easier than you might expect. All it takes is a big leap.
Think about it. You live in a big city, no doubt make big money and pay a big rent. To live without a job for even a month or two is absolutely crippling. It can be the worst thing in the world. It doesn’t have to be like that though. You don’t have to be squirreling it all away for a rainy day, terrified that one day the flow of money will stop. Living like that can be hedonistic and thrilling and just frankly fun, but eventually it will wear you down. And you will want to leave. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Because there’s a better life out there for you, a life where you can relax. A life where you can close your eyes at night and not worry about bills and money, and think about what you’re going to be doing the next time you open your eyes. It seems like a brilliant fantasy, but it couldn’t be closer to reality if you tried. All you have to do is reach out and take it. Stop caring, stop living like that. Leave the city, leave it all behind. Find a job that pays you a decent amount elsewhere, or freelance online instead if you can. The number of people that can work remotely now is crazy. Instead of spending your entire life in the cycle of the tube, grey city, bed, just go and be free.
Once you realise that everything you “need” in life is just a desire, it gets so very much easier. You’re free to escape, free to go and be happy somewhere else. Free to actually be free. And all it takes is for you to take your freedom back. For you to say “I deserve this” and I should be free to do as I like, when I like. It’s not about being selfish or demanding, it’s about ensuring that you get the freedoms that you deserve. The freedoms that have always been waiting there for you, and now you only need to reach out and take. If you do that, you could soon find yourself with everything you’ve ever wanted. All it takes is for you to have the bravery to take that first leap into the unknown, spread your wings and start to soar. The only question is: will you do it?
